Tuesday around lunch time I met my friend Keith in Saline, Michigan about 30 minutes away. He was lucky enough to discover a sepia brown 914 stored for 28 years. The owner bought it in 1984, had it repainted in 1989 and when life happened, he put it in the back of his garage until Keith got there. When I showed up to help load it, he had already broke loose the driver front caliper. We continued to work around the car freeing up the wheels but the rear brake calipers had to be cut off.
Pushing the car off the wall set in motion the Ansa exhaust with product plate stamped 1977. It fell straight to the floor. Rust had eaten through the pipes next to the mounts yet the tips pressed against wood behind the car propped it in place all this time. Some parts went missing as with many paint jobs such as the front bumper, side trim below the sail panels, fog light glass and the front valance. But who could argue with a time warp car coupled with a rare color code, sway bars and a 2.0 motor. The interior save for an after market radio was just about perfect as was that day.
