These late 60’s, early 70’s odometers always stop workin’. So did the “newer” ones for that matter. If it wasn’t the pot metal gear rounding out on the shaft, it was the crappy plastic gear breaking its cogs. At this point, I think I’ve fixed close to a half dozen of each and have it down to three simple steps.
Step 1:
Morn to yourself. Wonder how many miles have gone by untethered and how many times it really turned over.
Step 2:
Pull it out of the car, pry the ring off with a tiny screwdriver working it slowly around and around until the ring is loose enough to pull off, pull the top shaft of white cogs, pull the shaft out below holding all the numbers, crimp the pot metal cog GENTLY to make it oval, crimp the vise grips on the shaft to score it under the pot metal cog only to give it more teeth, sand and paint the rings, clean the glass, put it together.
Step 3:
Look at it for a while on your desk thinking Hollywood Speedometer would have charged me coin to fix this.
